Our world is large and very diverse and full of many, many different languages and cultures that are as rich and diverse as they are different.
Culture is combination of the history, art, habits and customs of an ethnic group or country. Each month, St. Augustine Catholic School and Multicultural Leaning Center celebrates this diversity by highlighting a different culture.
December has been a wonderful month. We celebrated the birth of Christ by celebrating Christmas Around the World. This theme was celebrated in art, in instruction, in music, and in a special Christmas Program. Be sure and check out the Christmas Program and Christmas Party photo albums that are listed on the right side. The students and teachers did a fantastic job celebrating the birth of Christ in many different ways.

November is a month to celebrate immigration. So many people have come to this country for so many different reasons. Some are still coming for the same reasons our ancestors did. Some came for the adventure and the hopes of finding wealth. Others sought a better life for their families. Many came for the opportunity to finally own land. Many have come here to escape war and oppression.
They have come by boats, by cars, by planes, by foot and by swimming. Some have crawled over walls while others crawled under them. Most have come with the honest hope of a better life.

Lower school grades have taken different countries to learn about during this month. First grade is learning about Irish immigration, Second about English, Third about Czechoslovakia, Fourth Germany and Fifth is learning about Italian immigration.
Upper school has been creating projects related to immigration in general. All are coming to an understanding of what it could mean to move to another country.

There are several theories about how the Indians first came to America. The most logical on is that they followed the game walking over the ice that connected what is now Siberia with Alaska. From there they moved down the coast and settled the different areas where game was plentiful. It is believed that there were several migrations to this land during the early Stone Age period.
Another theory is that some of these early settlers came by boat. Though this one is debated there is some proof for this. Donald P. Ryan offers some insight about reed boats and how ether Native Americans or Egyptians could both have sailed back and forth on boats. You can find his site, The Ra Expeditions Revisited at http://www.plu.edu/~ryandp/RAX.html . You can also find a PDF file written by the archaeologist, Thor Heyerdahl, who built reed boats an sailed them from Egypt to South America at: http://www.jstor.org/pss/1789016 .
